Agricultural Science

Agricultural Education is designed for students to build upon their experiences in and out of the classroom. Students have the opportunity to hone skills through nationally recognized competitions, build leadership principles at state and national gatherings, and explore colleges and careers.

AGRICULTURE FOOD AND NATURAL RESOURCES (AFNR)

In this class, students learn about the seven career fields in agriculture: Animal science, bioscience, business management, engineering, food science, natural resource management, and plant science. In addition, students examine and explore the FFA organization and Work Based Learning opportunities. This class will help you develop communication and leadership skills and is taught in the most hands-on method possible! Join this class if you are interested in learning by doing! All students will have the opportunity to participate in FFA activities. 

 

ANIMAL ANATOMY AND MANAGEMENT

Students will learn and apply responsible animal management principles and routine practices in relation to animal welfare and behavior. Students will examine the anatomy and physiology of body systems within animals as well as the interrelationships among systems. This course will help students prepare for careers in veterinary science, animal health, nutrition, and behavior. All students will have the opportunity to participate in FFA activities. 
 

MECHANICAL PRINCIPLES

Students interested in engineering, construction, mechanics, or maintenance should take this course.  Students will learn key problem-solving skills while diving into extensive hands-on activities that address “how” mechanical systems work while also completing coursework that allows you to explain “why” things are engineered and designed the way they are. They will learn electrical theory, wiring, hydraulics, engine operation, and principles of engineering design. All students will have the opportunity to participate in FFA activities.

Want to own or manage a business?  This course is for you! Students will learn the skills needed to own and operate their own business by developing a business plan, applying marketing and sales techniques, and identifying business structures. You will have the opportunity to learn about leadership and management styles and the impact they have on business. In this class, we will explore finance, economics, career development, and human resources and explain their importance in business management. Students apply these business principles to global scenarios related to food production and distribution. Students will have the opportunity to participate in FFA activities. This course will help students prepare for careers in business ownership, marketing, economics, and communications. 

*College Credit may be obtained by students with satisfactory performance in the class and on the state WebXamend of course exam. 
 

SUSTAINABLE FOOD & ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS**

This hands-on class involves the study of plant anatomy and physiology, propagation, biotechnology, plant nutrition, soil science, ecosystems and restoration ecology, air and water quality, precision agriculture, machine safety, crop harvesting, and marketing. Course work focuses on solving real world problems through management paradigms. Students will earn advanced science credit, and have the opportunity to attain college credit. Students will complete activities that prepare them for careers in biotechnology, botany, agronomy, environmental sciences, natural resource management, engineering, and policy. All students will have the opportunity to participate in FFA activities.

**Advanced Science Credit is awarded for those passing this course.
