This course examines world events from 1600 to the present. It explores the impact of the democratic and industrial revolutions, the forces that led to world domination by European powers, the wars that changed empires, the ideas that led to independence movements and the effects of global interdependence. The concepts of historical thinking introduced in earlier grades continue to build with students locating and analyzing primary and secondary sources from multiple perspectives to draw conclusions.

This course examines the history of the United States of America from 1877 to the present. The federal republic has withstood challenges to its national security and expanded the rights and roles of its citizens. The episodes of its past have shaped the nature of the country today and prepared it to attend to the challenges of tomorrow. Understanding how these events came to pass and their meaning for today’s citizens is the purpose of this course. The concepts of historical thinking introduced in earlier grades continues to build with students locating and analyzing primary and secondary sources from multiple perspectives to draw conclusions.

Students examine the Founding Documents which form the basis for the United States of America and how the American people govern themselves at national, state and local levels of government is the basis for this course. State standards studied will contribute to the students’ understanding of the political and economic systems of the United States. American Government credit is required for graduation.

This course introduces students to the nature, purpose and structure of the American political system. Attention is given to the institutions and processes that create public policy. The strengths and weaknesses of the American political system are discussed, along with the role of citizens in a democracy. This course provides an introduction to the vast and diverse field of economics which teaches the student the principles, concepts, and theories that constitute the core of the study of economics. Completion of this semester course will give students the knowledge to better understand economic principles, while preparing them for living in a world in which they work, buy, sell, and actively participate as citizens who make choices. This course stresses critical-thinking and problem-solving skills students need for making economic decisions that will affect them for the rest of their lives.

The purpose of this class will be to view films and see how they present social issues. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the film industry has confronted, challenged, and explored various social issues through its films. Social issue films are an excellent resource for teaching social issues. This class will select films that cover various Social Studies Model Curriculum for American and World History. Topics that will be covered could be as mentioned in the list below, and this list will be just a sample of possible topics. Assignments will be a blend with writing assignments using ELA skills - (i.e. Works Cited page). *Students enrolled in this course may explore controversial issues through class assignments and discussion.

This course is an introduction to a college level survey course that will examine basic concepts, principles, and methods central to the scientific study of sociology.
